There is a special kind of grumpiness reserved for people who take their cake seriously, and Springfield has a way of testing that patience. You can spend a morning watching the bakers at Village Sweet manhandle flour sacks, then follow your nose past the Korean corn dogs on Backlick Road to a place like Tiffany’s for a slice of Milojas that justifies the entire drive.

The spread runs from the obscenely decadent chocolate croissants at Bakeshop to the restrained, Ethiopian-inspired espresso notes at Flavor Cake. Our mission was simple: find the slices worth your time and your belt size.

We ate the evidence. All of it.

Here is your definitive order.

Best eclairs and pastries
Well-stocked Swiss products
Spacious interior, ample seating
Convenient front parking
Enjoyable chocolate icing tops

The Swiss Bakery and Pastry Shop is not a place for the faint of heart, nor the faint of appetite. I arrived expecting a modest counter and instead found a spacious interior with seating enough to plot a small coup. The chocolate icing on their cakes deserves a salute; it is glossy, firm, and unapologetically rich. Their eclairs are the sort that make you forget your own name mid-bite. Parking is absurdly convenient, which only increased my suspicion that this place is too good to be true. Swiss products line the shelves like a quiet challenge to my wallet. I left heavier and happier. That is the review.

Super moist cupcakes
Perfect buttercream frosting
Best dozen ever ordered
Amazing red velvet with chips

Nothing Bundt Cakes operates with the quiet confidence of a place that knows exactly what it is doing. I ordered a dozen, skeptical as always, and was promptly humbled. The cupcakes are super moist, the kind of damp that feels like a secret. Buttercream frosting sits atop each one with the precision of a tailor's hem. The red velvet, studded with chips, is a marvel of texture. I have ordered many dozens in my life. This was the best dozen I have ever had. I say that with the grumpiness of a man who does not hand out compliments freely. Take my word or don't. Your loss either way.

Early morning bustling atmosphere
Strong pandan latte flavor
Ripe mango ice delight
Watch for inconsistent fillings
Quality control needs attention

Breeze Bakery Cafe is a morning zoo, and I mean that in the best way. I walked in at an ungodly hour, and the place was already buzzing with sleepy-eyed customers and the hiss of espresso. Their pandan latte is strong, a green punch that wakes you up faster than a scolding. The mango ice is ripe and delightful, a cold treat that deserves a moment of silence. But beware the fillings; they are inconsistent, sometimes generous, sometimes miserly. Quality control is a work in progress. I suspect they know it. Still, the chaos has a charm. I left with a slightly burned tongue and no regrets. That is a successful visit in my book.

Great cake options
Top-tier delivery service
Excellent vegan choices
Cozy breakfast atmosphere

Bakeshop, the first of its name, has great cake options, and I say that without hesitation. Their delivery service is top-tier, which matters when you are too lazy to leave the house. The vegan choices are excellent, a phrase I never thought I would write. I sat down for a breakfast of sorts, and the atmosphere was cozy, the kind of quiet that lets you read a paper without being bothered. The cakes themselves are sturdy, honest constructions. Nothing fancy, nothing fraudulent. I appreciated that. If you want drama, go elsewhere. If you want cake, stay here. It is that simple. I left feeling fed and slightly smug. Good for them.

Tanghulu and strawberry shortcake
Ideal hours and grab-and-go
Convenient birthday cake browsing
Three-slice tasting opportunity

Shilla Bakery & Cafe in Annandale is a place of efficient pleasures. The hours are ideal, and the grab-and-go model suits my impatient nature. I stopped by to browse for a birthday cake and ended up with three slices, which the staff encouraged with a knowing smile. The strawberry shortcake is light, almost ethereal, and the tanghulu is a crunchy, sugary surprise. I tasted all three slices slowly, like a man on death row. The convenience of the location cannot be overstated. You can be in and out in minutes. I was out in four, holding a box that did not survive the car ride. No regrets.

Milojas cake to die for
Worth the long drive
Friendly and welcoming staff
Reliable years of service

Tiffany's Bakery is worth the long drive, and I drove a long way, mostly out of spite. The Milojas cake is to die for, a phrase I use sparingly. It is rich, layered, and utterly without mercy. The staff are friendly and welcoming, which softened my initial grumpiness. This place has years of service behind it, and you can taste that reliability in every bite. I sat down, ordered coffee, and took my time. The cake did not disappoint. Neither did the people. I left planning my next excursion, which is the highest compliment I can offer. If you are local, you already know. If not, start driving.

Excellent pastries and coffee
Decadent chocolate croissants
Great spicy hot chicken biscuit
Warm, welcoming table service
Cozy outdoor seating option

Bakeshop, the second of its name, is a different beast. The pastries and coffee are excellent, and the chocolate croissants are decadent, flaky, and almost obscene. I also tried their spicy hot chicken biscuit, which is a meal disguised as a snack. The table service is warm and welcoming, a rarity in this age of self-checkout. Outdoor seating is cozy, though I preferred the inside, where I could watch the regulars. This place has a rhythm, and I found myself falling into it. I ordered too much, ate too much, and did not apologize. The staff seemed to approve. That is all I ask from a bakery. Give me good food and no judgment.

Authentic Ethiopian-inspired cake flavors
Bold espresso notes with balanced sweetness
Memorable taste that evokes nostalgia
Quality ingredients in every bite

Flavor Cake and Pastry is not your typical bakery, and thank goodness for that. The cakes draw on authentic Ethiopian-inspired flavors, which is a bold and welcome change. There is a bold espresso note that cuts through the sweetness, a balance I have rarely encountered. Each bite evokes nostalgia, though for what, I cannot say. Perhaps it is the quality of the ingredients, which are clearly chosen with care. I did not expect to be moved by a cake, but here we are. The texture is dense but not heavy, and the sweetness is restrained. I left with a strange sense of peace. That is not something I say about pastries. It is something I say about this one.

Easy online ordering process
Online ordering earns discounts
Beautiful, accurate cake designs
Delicious vanilla strawberry buttercream
Rave reviews from friends

CakeLove, the warehouse location, is a study in efficiency and charm. The online ordering process is easy, dangerously so, and they reward you with discounts for doing it. I ordered a vanilla strawberry buttercream cake for a friend's birthday, and it arrived looking exactly like the picture. The design was beautiful, accurate, and almost too pretty to cut. Almost. The cake itself was delicious, light and sweet without being cloying. My friends raved, which I recorded for future reference. If you want a cake that looks like a professional made it and tastes like a grandma did, this is your place. I will order again, probably soon, probably too soon.

Tiramisu worth the walk
Morning coffee, local ritual
Staff explains menu kindly
Ethiopian beans, robust flavor
Sugar-coated bombolino, take it

Dama Restaurant and Pastry has a tiramisu that is worth the walk, and I walked a fair distance to prove it. The morning coffee has become a local ritual, one I have adopted with enthusiasm. The staff explain the menu with patience, which I appreciate because I ask too many questions. The Ethiopian beans are robust, a flavor that lingers pleasantly. And the sugar-coated bombolino? Take it. Just take it. You will thank me later. The place has a quiet charm, the kind that makes you want to linger. I lingered, had a second coffee, and considered a third. I did not, but only because I ran out of excuses. This is a bakery that understands the art of the simple thing done well.

Open kitchen, visible baking
Cozy seating, varied options
Worth the money, huge portions

Village Sweet is a peculiar sort of place. They let you watch the baking happen, which is either charming or a distraction, depending on your mood. I found it oddly reassuring to see flour dust and deliberate hands. The seating is cozy, if you like the feeling of being in someone's well-kept kitchen. Portions are enormous, almost indecently so. You will pay for them, but you will not feel robbed. The cake options vary, and I appreciated the lack of pretense. It is honest food, served without flourish. I finished my slice and considered a second. I did not, but only because my pride intervened. Worth the money, yes. Worth the belt loosening, also yes.

Exceptional tres leches cake
Reasonable pricing for size
Skilled naked cake replication
Delicious flan, not oversweet
Friendly service, easy parking

Dulces Delicias Bakery has a tres leches cake that should be studied by scientists. It is exceptional, a perfect balance of soaked sponge and cream. The price is reasonable for the size, which feels like a small miracle in this city. I also tried their flan, and it is not oversweet, a rare virtue. The staff are friendly without being performative, and parking is easy, which is more than I can say for most bakeries. They even replicated a naked cake for a friend's event, and it looked so good I almost regretted not ordering two. Almost. I will be back, and I will bring a bigger appetite.
