Fairfax moviegoing is a personality test disguised as a Friday night. One mile down the road, you can sit in a rocking chair for an art-house indie, then drive five minutes to a theater where the chili cheese dog is the main attraction and the Cheetos popcorn will stain your soul.
I have reviewed every screen in this town, from the unrenovated time capsule at University Mall to the bone-shaking XD at Cinemark. My standards are simple: clean seats, honest staff, and snacks that justify the regret.
The list below is my confession. Go find your movie home.
I will be the one in the stained sweater.
Cinema Arts Theatres
Highlights
---
Quiet independent film haven
Friendly, neighborhood-concession staff
Clean, comfortable rocking seats
Fair prices for showtimes
Excellent sound isolation
Cinema Arts Theatres is the rare Fairfax spot where I actually forget I am reviewing anything and just watch the movie. The rocking seats are clean, the sound isolation is excellent, and the staff at the concession stand know their regulars by name. Prices feel fair, almost quaint in an era of $18 matinees. I wandered in expecting a quiet indie haven and instead found a neighborhood living room with a projector. The only downside? I missed the first ten minutes of my film because I was too comfortable. That is a me problem, not theirs.

University Mall Theatres
Highlights
---
Affordable private theater rentals
Nostalgic, unrenovated charm
Friendly, accommodating staff
Locally owned for decades
Great budget date option
University Mall Theatres has not been renovated since the Carter administration, and I mean that as a compliment. The seats creak, the carpet is a time capsule, and the whole place smells faintly of popcorn butter and nostalgia. But the staff are so accommodating and the private theater rentals are absurdly affordable that I forgave every worn armrest. It is locally owned, which matters in a strip mall sea of chains. For a budget date, you cannot beat it. Just do not expect stadium seating. I left with a sore back and a huge grin.

Cinemark Fairfax Corner and XD
Highlights
---
Clean and well-maintained venue
Extremely comfortable seating
Reliable military ticket discounts
Ten years of friendly service
Fast concession and helpful staff
Cinemark Fairfax Corner and XD is the reliable friend who always shows up on time. I have been coming here for over a decade, and the staff still recognize me even when I forget their names. The seating is extremely comfortable, the venue is spotless, and my military discount has saved me enough to buy an extra large popcorn. Concessions are fast, which is a miracle. The XD screen shakes my bones in the best way. It is not adventurous, but it is consistent. And after my last few theater experiences, consistency feels like a luxury.

Angelika Film Center & Cafe at Mosaic
Highlights
---
Easy online ticket scanning
Bar and baked goods
Classic and new releases
Charming, distinct projection quality
Angelika Film Center & Cafe at Mosaic makes me feel sophisticated until I spill popcorn on my sweater. The online ticket scanning is seamless, and the bar and baked goods are a dangerous combination. I grabbed a latte and a croissant and settled into a showing of a classic I had somehow never seen. The projection quality has a charming, distinct warmth that no digital multiplex can replicate. It is pricier than some, but the atmosphere justifies it. I left with crumbs on my chest and a newfound respect for Hitchcock. I will be back, stained sweater and all.

Regal Fairfax Towne Center
Highlights
---
Clean, well-maintained theater
Cheetos popcorn surprisingly delicious
Reclining seats and garage parking
Friendly staff, easy entry
Chili cheese dog fire
Regal Fairfax Towne Center is where I went expecting standard chain mediocrity and instead found Cheetos popcorn. Yes, Cheetos popcorn. It is surprisingly delicious, which is the only way I can describe a snack that leaves orange residue on every finger. The theater itself is clean, the reclining seats are plush, and the garage parking means I do not circle the lot like a vulture. The chili cheese dog? Absolutely fire. Staff are friendly and the entry process is painless. I came for the movie, stayed for the hot dog, and left with a full heart and a stained shirt.
